Magic School Bus Science Club Science Experiments – How we mixed up Art, Fun and Science!

The Magic School Bus science club science experiment kits for kids is based on the award-winning series, The Magic School Bus, which teaches kids about science through fun and interactive ways.  The Magic school Bus subscription is a part of The Young Scientists Club and the science projects are delivered monthly for 12 months. Children will explore science through experiments.

Each kit includes a colorful theme based man ual(12 pages) based on The Magic School Bus characters, as well as some important and critical items you would need to complete at least seven experiments related to that month’s theme !.  Note the fact that not all the elements required to finish a project was included. But these are mostly the household items, and there is a  ninety-nine percent chance that you would be having these already.  Example for these items would be, used water bottles, vinegar, baking soda, etc.

The Magic School Bus science kits are for kids ages 5-12. But I would say more appropriate for children ages 7 and up. Trust me when I say this, “if you like doing science experiments along with your kids,” then you’ll LOVE The Magic School Bus Science Club!

Ms. Frizzle the teacher and the main character from The Magic School Bus makes science an exhilarating experience. If you have not heard about The Magic School Bus before, each of the stories centers on the antics of a fictional elementary school teacher, Ms. Frizzle, and her class, who board a “magic school bus”, which takes them on field trips to impossible locations, such as the solar system, clouds, the past, and inside the human body. Ms. Frizzle is a wacky teacher who is always on the go to explore. You should introduce your kids to some of the Magic School Bus videos and books if you have not yet. They are super fun!.

My son was super thrilled when we got our first package. It was about Volcanoes. So when his best buddy came over for a sleepover they wanted to do the Volcano related experiments. Instead of diving directly into the experiments, I made them read about Volcanoes. We had this simple yet very informative book about volcanoes Kingfisher Readers L3: Volcanoes. You should most certainly plan to grab this book if you want your kids to learn about volcanoes. We also made volcanic eruption art a mix of science and art project. You could most certainly check the link Volcanic Eruption Art Work: Mixing Science and Art!

The book covers about What is a Volcano, inside a volcano, before and after a volcanic eruption, different types of volcanoes and most importantly “Pompeii” a small town in Itay which got completely buried under volcanic ashes from the eruption of the of Mount Vesuvius.
Interesting fact about the little town Pompeii is that recently(June 2016) Archeologists discovered coins amid ruins of an ancient shop. This image is from a newspaper.

So much to learn is it not?! Then I gave the kids the task to draw on how it would look inside a volcano. The kids did a fantastic Job!

Once we learned our concepts and had a mental picture of Volcanoes and Eruptions the kids, and I started off with our experiment setup and process that follows on.

The Kit came with a small volcanic rock a pumice stone, and they were super thrilled! The kit had sheets of papers, black paint, paint brush, a magnifying glass to build a volcano.

Based on the instructions made a glue and used old paper pieces to stick them onto the volcano and then let it dry overnight.

In the morning the first thing kids started doing was to paint the volcano.

The Boys had to apply a trial and error method to see how much vinegar or baking powder would be required. The first attempt they did not see anything happen. So we started discussing what need to be done to make it work.

My daughter is a toddler, and she is always involved in all the experiments we do, and I am happy to raise my girl amidst all these curious and fun STEM-based learnings!.

Our next project was about Weather! My son and I started reading about weather and again before we start any of our experiments we do read and educate ourselves about what that topic and then we try hands on!.

The kit came with most of the materials required to do a project.

We read a book called Kingfisher Readers L4: Weather. A great book to add on to your kid’s library.

So this time while reading the book we came up with a crazy idea of adding a touch of color through art to our science project. We learned about the water cycle and my son already had an idea about what a water cycle is. So we made one using acrylic paints, colored sand, cotton! Vola! The project just got super fun! You can find a simple post on how we made the Water Cycle here.

Once we had fun making water cycle and again understanding about the weather, we moved on to our actual project making a “Wind Wane.”

This was the first time my son saw an actual compass. He was super excited about the fact that however, you turned your compass it would end up showing the right directions it was a sheer mystery for him. How did that happen? Was his question. Aren’t these simple things interesting for curious minds?

Once we were done with our Wind  Wane, it was time for us to test. We had our set of failures. The Wind wane kept breaking because the base was not stable and also the directions of the wind wane kept falling. After few fixes, we finally were able to make our Wind Wane functional. Eureka!! Moment!

Yep! That was a reaction for what we have achieved! We learned something important. The Design process! And that engineering is all about problem-solving.

Wait! These were just one experiment each from the Project kits we received! As mentioned earlier each project comes with 7 experiments!! We might not be writing about the remaining projects but we would be working on them for sure.
Here are the Highlights again!

Oh my goodness, your children are adorable! I like that you read up on the subject before doing the “experiments”. They will get more out of the activity that way. I also like the way you incorporated art.
